Dear classmates,
It is now 40 days and counting until we meet to begin to paint the town red for the 50th class reunion and extravaganza of the Beaumont High School class of 1957. The dates, in case you have forgotten are March 30th through April 1st. Our committee has worked overtime to plan a fun and exciting weekend for us, and our job is to come and be a participant. If you have chosen, in the past, for whatever reason not to attend previous reunions, then YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT THIS ONE. It is said that the 50th reunion is the ONE reunion to attend, even if you don’t think you will enjoy yourself. There will be nice, large nametags, hopefully with pictures, although the debate is whether the pictures will be helpful or, perhaps, confusing. “Why of course I remember you. Now, let’s see, didn’t you have dark hair in high school, and a little more of it? Well, besides that, you haven’t changed a bit”!Standing in the City Auditorium that sweltering day in May of ’57, all we thought about was that we “made it”. Life would now be a breeze as we sailed through college, got jobs, married, had children. Life would be good and success just over the next hill, so we hit the ground running. The next fifty years for most of us have had a little bit of everything. We’ve seen comedy and tragedy, love, marriage and divorce, children and grandchildren and now some have great-grandchildren, and if we had been told all of this that warm day in May as we danced the night away, we MIGHT have had a little apprehension about the next 50 years, but instead we entered those years with the same amount of love and enthusiasm that we retain as we all come together to make the circle full, one more time.
Do not put off this reunion, thinking you will make the next one. The time is NOW. Look on the next page to see about the activities you can choose from, or, best of all, choose the full buffet. I want to see you at Suga’s on Friday night, Suga. I want to trip the light fantastic, and hopefully not just…trip, while others just…watch! I want to go to Rio Rita’s and have Mexican food on Saturday; I DO Not want to play golf on Saturday afternoon, but for those who do, then Gene Arnold is your man. And I certainly want to be at the hotel on Saturday evening, where lovely ladies and dashing gentlemen will enjoy being Fred and Ginger once again. It just won’t be the same without YOU, so start thinking about how much fun you are going to have and how much you will regret not being there if you choose not to come.
In the South, perhaps more than any other region, we go back home in dreams and memories, hoping it remains what it was on a lazy, still summer’s day 50 year ago. It is not the same, of course, but it will seem more like it on March 30th-April 1st for those of us who choose to be in Beaumont, as we renew old friendships, see people we haven’t seen for 50 years, and generally find ourselves back in school-and loving every minute of it. See you at Suga’s, on Friday night.
